The charismatic locations of Switzerland are very popular among the Indian tourists particularly because of the beautiful song sequences shot in the Bollywood blockbusters. The captivating green meadows, astounding snow-clad mountains, old, historic castles, mesmerizing lakes have been attracting the filmmakers from the decades to shoot the romantic scenes and the song sequences of their movies in Switzerland.

Interlaken, Zürich, Geneva, Bern, Gruyere, the Rhine Falls, Gstaad, Jungfrau, Engelberg, Lucerne and many other spots in Switzerland have come alive through the silver screen to nature lovers, honeymooners, and cinephiles.

The Union of Bollywood Movies with Switzerland

Indian cinema’s fascination to shoot the dreamy sequences in the captivating locations in Switzerland significantly increases the country’s popularity among the tourists. Especially, the Indian couples consider this country as the ideal honeymoon destination.

Switzerland was first showcased in Indian movies through “Sangam” (1964) , directed by the late filmmaker Raj Kapoor. Some significant scenes of the Shammi Kapoor starred movie, “An Evening in Paris” (1967) were shot in Switzerland. Dev Anand, in his directorial debut, “Prem Pujari” (1970) also followed the trend.

The ‘King of Romance’ in the ‘Paradise of Romance’

The ‘King of Romance’, Yash Chopra shot many of the romantic scenes from his films in Switzerland. Even, there is a mountain lake in Lauenen, Gstaad named ‘Yash Chopra Lake’! Not only that, after his sudden demise in 2012, he was nominated as the honorary ambassador of Interlaken by the Embassy of Switzerland and his statue was also unveiled in 2016. Furthermore, a train was launched in Jungfrau Railways, titled after his name.

Any discussion about Bollywood-Switzerland connection is incomplete without the massive hit “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”. This masterpiece has promoted Switzerland to the Indian tourists like nothing else. Even the Indian audience, especially the romantic couples went gaga over the places captured in DDLJ and harbour a strong desire to explore those filmy locations.

  • The famous bridge scene from this movie was captured beautifully in the town of Saanen.
  • “Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main” song was filmed in Gstaad.
  • The scene where Shah Rukh Khan was running behind a plane was filmed at Saanen Airport
  • The railway station scene where Kajol misses the train was filmed in the Zweisimmen Railway Station

Swiss Alps: The breath-taking Swiss Alps is a symbol of the beauty of Switzerland. It is a bankable destination for tourists from all over the world for hiking, trekking, skiing, and other adventurous activities.

A very famous song in the iconic movie, “Darr” (1993) had been exquisitely shot against the background of the Alps in Switzerland.

The pristine beauty of the Swiss Alps was also filmed in the famous Sridevi-movie “Chandni” (1989).

The Castle of Chillon: This old castle, located along the shore of Lake Geneva, is considered among the seven wonders of Switzerland. The exterior of this castle is captured in a song from the movie “Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain” featuring Anil Kapoor and Kajol.

The Castle of Aigle: This castle is located in the Canton of Vaud. It is a Swiss Heritage Site boasting of great National Significance. Surrounded by enchanting vineyards, the Castle of Aigle is also filmed in the movie “Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain”.

Rhine Falls: You will find these falls in the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland. They are considered the largest plain waterfall in Europe. These falls have been beautifully shot for the title song of the film, “Had Kar Di Aapne” starring Govinda and Rani Mukherjee.

Chapel Bridge and the Jesuit Church, Lucerne: Chapel Bridge is a wooden bridge located in Lucerne, which is another picturized town in Bollywood films. The interior of the bridge is famous for some classy and elegant paintings of the 17th century. You have witnessed these in a song of the movie titled “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag” casting Rani Mukherjee and Abhishek Bachhan.
